What you can do

Detect counterfeit drugs

The California Board of Pharmacy offers eight tips on how to avoid counterfeit, misbranded or adulterated prescription drugs.
  1. Know your supplier. Just because a supplier is licensed does not mean it is trustworthy.
  2. Watch out for "good deals," especially with new suppliers.
  3. Be wary of offers that come via fax and emails.
  4. Look out for signs of removed labels such as tacky adhesive residue; discolored labels; slight differences in bottle or container sizes.
  5. Heed warnings from other patients.
  6. Notice sudden changes in blood and lab work results.
  7. Were the drugs purchased from foreign sources?
  8. If you suspect a problem: Contact the drug manufacturer; the U.S. Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 800.332.1088; or the California Board of Pharmacy at www.pharmacy.ca.gov , 916.574.7900
